What is considered to be the first book in a series when you are reading it? The first book the author wrote, or the first book in the chronology? They're not always the same thing.
Mercedes Lackey, for example, started writing with the
Arrows set, followed by the
Last Herald Mage books, but the first set in the chronology is the Mage Wars set.
L.E. Modesitt's Recluse books are another example, I believe (though I'm not sure) that the
Magic of Recluse was the first book in that series to be written, but
The Fall of Angels is the first in the chronology.
Or, the Darkover series of Marion Zimmer Bradley. The first book in that one is
Darkover Landfall, but I doubt that it was the first book written. I think that honour goes to the
Heritage of Hastur or one of those. I know I started reading this series with
Exile's Song, which made a good introduction to the world and the characters.
Anne McCaffrey's books are written like that as well.
Dragonsdawn was written well after
Dragonflight and
Dragonquest, or so I understand.
